1 Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radars

A.Hirose, R.Natsuaki, Y.Otsuka and B.Konishi

Among synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques, interferometric SAR (InSAR) observes phase difference between phase measurements of slightly different paths for a target area, by which we can get the landscape (height and its changes) information to generate digital elevation map (DEM). It extends the applications to observations of earthquakes and volcanic activities. Theoretically, SAR interferogram should be a conservative field which mirrors the geologic distribution. However, actual interferograms contain massive rotational points, named singular points (SPs). They prevent us from creating accurate DEMs. However, the origin of the SPs is still unclear. This year, we conducted a series of experiments to elucidate SP generation mechanisms: In our previous work on PolInSAR, we found that the pixel-by-pixel scattering-mechanism-vector optimization deletes artificial SPs very drastically. We further investigated the SP generation mechanisms by examine what happens in the optimization process by paying attention to the relationship between the phase and polarization changes. Then, we found that the optimization parameters obtained in the optimization process shows high similarity to the unitary matrix parameters in diagonalization of coherency matrix. We found a high correlation between polarization changes and phase changes at the scattering itself. We think that we are successful in elucidating the SP generation mechanism. That is, with the present high-resolution observation of PolInSAR, we conclude that most of SPs are generated by the scattering itself.

2 Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radars

A.Hirose, R.Natsuaki, J.Song, G.Joshi and Y.Matsumoto
Among synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques, polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) pays attention to polarity of backscattered waves to visualize land-surface states such as vegetation and snow/ice as well as sea-surface oil spill. This technology is expected to realize global and precise observation of earth environment. Conventional methods are based on matrix decomposition where a so-called coherency matrix or covariance matrix is decomposed mathematically so that respective components correspond to surface scattering, double-bounce scattering, volume scattering and helical scattering, showing the land surface features. In contrast, we deal with observed polarization with quaternion neural networks. We investigate further our quaternion neural-network-based adaptive segmentation scheme that deals adaptively with Stokes vector, which is a more primordial entity in polarization. A Stokes vector is represented on or in the Poincare sphere. Quaternion neural networks (QNNs) are perfectly suitable for treating three-dimensional vectors in such a situation. This year, we proposed a new neural network system to realize polarization-feature dictionaries in a self-organizing manner by using quaternion auto-encoder (AE) neural networks to enhance the performance of vegetation/land-use clustering of PolSAR adaptive processing. We also found that, even the physical resolution becomes high, the minimum local window size needed to obtain statistical features is almost unchanged. We focus on the reason and meaning of this fact.

3 Ground Penetrating Visualization System

A.Hirose, Y.Song
We have been investigating a ground penetrating radar (GPR) system employing complex-valued self-organizing map (CSOM) for adaptive distinction between plastic landmines and other objects. We developed a new antenna, namely, walled linearly tapered slot antenna (walled LTSA), to construct a high-density array. With this first system, named SO-1, we conducted field experiments to confirm the high ability to visualize plastic landmines buried in laterite soil. The performance has been found very high. This year, we made progress in constructing a new GPR frontend that observes not only complex amplitude but also polarization. That is, full polarimetric GPR. We are going to combine the frontend with a new neural network that treats amplitude, phase and polarization in a consistent manner.

4 Near-Range Security Imaging

A.Hirose and N.Sugawara
We have been constructing a millimeter-wave (MMW) imaging system to visualize moving people and possessions in a real-time operation. It is based on our complex-valued self-organizing map (CSOM) and envelope phase detection (EPD) method by employing one-dimensional EPD front-end at the receiving end. MMW active imaging has potentially a variety of applications. This year, we design a polarization-sensitive system. By introducing polarization information, we aim to enhance the system ability to recognize targets more appropriately.

5 Heartbeat and Respiration Remote Sensing for Life Saving and Human Monitoring

A.Hirose and S.Goto
Remote sensing technology is expected applicable effectively to finding persons under debris of disasters such as earthquakes. Monitoring of aged people and patients is another important application. However, it is still difficult to detect people stably by their small movement of heartbeat or respiration. For example, NASA/JPL developed a system, but further investigation is needed before wide use. We apply neural networks to realize highly sensitive and adaptive detection of faint heartbeat and respiration. This year, we constructed a prototype system to conduct preliminary experiments. In particular, we tried possible combinations of adaptive signal-processing methods in the complex domain to optimize the system construction. We have proposed a new independent component analysis method suitable for this purpose, and we conduct experiments to show its effectiveness.

6 Channel Prediction in Mobile Communications

A.Hirose and H.Chen
Channel prediction is an important process for channel compensation in fading environment. If we can predict a future channel state, we can apply adaptive techniques such as pre-equalization and transmission power control before transmission in order to avoid degradation of communication quality. Previously, we proposed channel prediction methods employing the chirp z-transform (CZT) with a linear extrapolation as well as a Lagrange-based nonlinear extrapolation of frequency-domain parameters. We also presented a highly accurate method for predicting time-varying channels by combining the CZT with a complex-valued neural network (CVNN). This year, we investigated a possibility to include polarization to enhance the prediction ability.

7 Highly Functional Antennas

A.Hirose and T.Kaneko (+ H.Saito)
One of the most serious bottleneck in earth-observation satellite technology is the capacity shortage in downlink communications. Recent development of synthetic aperture radar is increasing the total amount of satellite data, resulting in one of the most significant big data. However, the available frequency band is limited, and the communication time in each communication with a ground station is short. Then the downlink capacity is strictly limited though the world institutes cooperate together. To obtain a high capacity to bandwidth ratio, we are working to develop a new communication system utilizing dual circular-polarization system. We also try to develop a new method to design a high-performance septum-type polarizer.

8 Millimeter-wave Non-invasive Measurement of Concentration of Blood Dissolved Substances

A.Hirose and S.Nagae
The wide millimeter-wave band is useful to detect characteristics of various substances such as glucose by using resonance and other phenomena. By using complex-valued neural networks (CVNNs), we expect to extract faint features of materials that has no apparent resonance nor absorption by acquiring the distributed response adaptively. Especially, we started to detect substances dissolved in blood non-invasively with high sensitivity by using CVNNs. This year, we start in-vivo experiments where various problems occur in the measurement. We investigate how we can solve the problems by use of the CVNNs adaptively.
9 Physical Reservoir Computing
A.Hirose and T.Ichimura (+ G.Tanaka, R.Nakane)
Present neural network hardware relies widely on graphics processing units (GPUs) to realize various deep-learning learning and processing in neural artificial intelligence (neuro-AI) systems. However, the total amount of information is huge in this sensor network era, resulting in seriously enormous electric power consumption and learning time. The most fundamental origin is the use of von Neumann type hardware, which is based on the symbol information representation and symbol information processing by manipulating bits. Though this architecture matches traditional logic-AI systems, it unfits the modern neuro-AI. To solve this problem, we have been investigating the basics characteristics of reservoir computing. This year, we conducted researches on spin-wave reservoir computing in its physical and information dynamics.
