1 Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radars

A.Hirose, S.Tsuda, T.Shimada and K.Oyama

Among synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques, interferometric SAR (InSAR) observes phase difference between phase measurements of slightly different paths for a target area, by which we can get the landscape (height and its changes) information to generate digital elevation map (DEM). It extends the applications to observations of earthquakes and volcanic activities. Theoretically, SAR interferogram should be a conservative field which mirrors the geologic distribution. However, actual interferograms contain massive rotational points, named singular points (SPs). They prevent us from creating accurate DEMs. However, the origin of the SPs is still unclear. This year, we pursued the possibility to compensate SPs by taking into consideration the polarization information by based on a set of results in scaled lightwave experiments to simulate ideal observations without ionospheric or vapor effects. We also investigated the structurization of terrain by using neural networks to extract automatically similar features existing in global InSAR data for aiming at disaster mitigation and monitoring.

2 Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radars

A.Hirose and T.Shimada
Among synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques, polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) pays attention to polarity of backscattered waves to visualize land-surface states such as vegetation and snow/ice as well as sea-surface oil spill. This technology is expected to realize global and precise observation of earth environment. Conventional methods are based on matrix decomposition where a so-called coherency matrix or covariance matrix is decomposed mathematically so that respective components correspond to surface scattering, double-bounce scattering, volume scattering and helical scattering, showing the land surface features. This year, we investigated further our quaternion neural-network-based adaptive segmentation scheme that deals adaptively with Stokes vector, which is a more primordial entity in polarization. A Stokes vector is represented on or in the Poincare sphere. Quaternion neural networks (QNNs) are perfectly suitable for treating three-dimensional vectors in such a situation. We constructed a QNN that is sensitive to incidence angle for snow mapping in mountainous regions. We also worked on polarimetric interferometric SAR (PolInSAR) to investiagte the origin of singular-point (SP) generation in InSAR described in the preceding subject.

3 Antipersonnel Plastic Landmine Visualization System

A.Hirose and E.Koyama
We have been investigating a ground penetrating radar (GPR) system employing complex-valued self-organizing map (CSOM) for adaptive distinction between plastic landmines and other objects. We developed a new antenna, namely, walled linearly tapered slot antenna (walled LTSA), to construct a high-density array. With this first system, named SO-1, we conducted field experiments to confirm the high ability to visualize plastic landmines buried in laterite soil. The performance has been found very high. Now we are constructing a next generation system by focusing on (1) the use of electronic switches and (2) the development of one-dimensional array antenna combined with mechanical motion. Since electronic switches have drawbacks of high loss and leakage, we optimized the switching circuit by using both of mechanical and electronic switches appropriately. We checked the fundamental performance of the newly developed system to find somewhat large fluctuation of characteristics in antenna elements. We also proposed a new calibration method to cancel the variability of antenna elements and switches. Then we are conducting the evaluation of total system performance.

4 Near-Range Security Imaging

A.Hirose, Y.Arima and R.Kamikubo
We have been constructing a millimeter-wave (MMW) imaging system to visualize moving people and possessions in a real-time operation. It is based on our complex-valued self-organizing map (CSOM) and envelope phase detection (EPD) method by employing one-dimensional EPD front-end at the receiving end. MMW active imaging has potentially a variety of applications. However, MMW circuits are often lossy and amplifiers are costly, which are serious problems in particular in arrays using many front-end circuits in parallel. To overcome these issues, we have proposed the envelope phase detection (EPD) method where MMW is directly detected without amplification just after received at the antenna. This year, we investigated the possibility to utilize the Doppler effect to visualize and distinguish human body, arms and legs, PET bottles and background. We tried various projection directions of MMW illumination to decompose motion directions.

5 Heartbeat and Respiration Remote Sensing for Life Saving and Human Monitoring

A.Hirose and A.E.Bezer
Remote sensing technology is expected applicable effectively to finding persons under debris of disasters such as earthquakes. Monitoring of aged people and patients is another important application. However, it is still difficult to detect people stably by their small movement of heartbeat or respiration. For example, NASA/JPL developed a system, but further investigation is needed before wide use. We apply neural networks to realize highly sensitive and adaptive detection of faint heartbeat and respiration. This year, we constructed a prototype system to conduct preliminary experiments. In particular, we tried possible combinations of adaptive signal-processing methods to optimize the system construction.

6 Channel Prediction in Mobile Communications

A.Hirose and T.Ding
Channel prediction is an important process for channel compensation in fading environment. If we can predict a future channel state, we can apply adaptive techniques such as pre-equalization and transmission power control before transmission in order to avoid degradation of communication quality. Previously, we proposed channel prediction methods employing the chirp z-transform (CZT) with a linear extrapolation as well as a Lagrange-based nonlinear extrapolation of frequency-domain parameters. We also presented a highly accurate method for predicting time-varying channels by combining the CZT with a complex-valued neural network (CVNN). This year, we proposed to include polarization information in the prediction. Experiment demonstrated the superiority to conventional methods. We are now conducting quantitative evaluation of our proposed method.

7 Highly Functional Antennas

A.Hirose, K.Kikuta and T.Hirano
Ultra wideband (UWB) wireless systems are expected to open new applications in communications and measurements. This is because of its capability to realize functions without disturbing other narrowband systems by utilizing frequency bands widely with low spectral density. This is a great merit in the era of difficulty in frequency allocation. This year, we investigated possible use of energy-bandgap (EBG) structure to mitigate the direct coupling of tapered slot antenna (TSA) array. EBG is sometimes used between patch antennas to mitigate direct coupling. But a TSA is much more wideband and the radiation direction is different (end-firing type). The applicability of EBG has never been investigated so far. Now we conduct simulations and experiments to elucidate the applicability.

8 Millimeter-wave Non-invasive Measurement of Concentration of Blood Dissolved Substances

A.Hirose and S.Hu
The wide millimeter-wave band is useful to detect characteristics of various substances by using resonance and other phenomena. By using complex-valued neural networks (CVNNs), we expect to extract faint features of materials that has no apparent resonance nor absorption by acquiring the distributed response adaptively. In this year, we started to detect substances dissolved in blood non-invasively with high sensitivity by using CVNNs. This year, we proposed an adaptive system employing complex-valued neural networks to extract the effect in the phase changes in transmission and/or reflection characteristics separate from the noise and mitigation of nonlinearity in the response.
9 Complex-valued neural networks: Deep learning and its applications
A.Hirose, Le D. S. Vu and H.Bayerlein
In the latest decade, the so-called deep learning has come to be widely used in image and various application fields. The bases were proposed and investigated more than forty years ago. The present wide use occurred because of the massive and wide availability of target data found on the web and big-data environment. The situation is similar also in the complex-valued neural networks (CVNNs). Massive data are acquired and stored by coherent imaging systems such as satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and other practically operated systems. We can evaluate the performance of CVNNs widely as well. This project aims to develop an environment where wide researchers can use CVNNs including complex-valued deep learning to promote further applications and next-generation fundamentals.
