1 Antipersonnel Plastic Landmine Visualization System
A.Hirose and E.Koyama
Our ground penetrating radar (GPR) system employs complex-valued self-organizing map (CSOM) for adaptive distinction between plastic landmines and other objects in landmine visualization systems. Previously we developed our walled linearly tapered slot antenna (walled LTSA) to construct a high-density array. With this first system, named SO-1, we conducted field experiments to confirm the high ability to visualize plastic landmines buried in laterite soil. The performance is found very high. However, we also found a few problems in SO-1, namely, the short lifetime of the mechanical radio-frequency switches and the difficulty in maintenance of the system using a large number of bundled cables. Then we started to design a new-generation visualization system to overcome these problems. We considered (1) an appropriate use of electronic switches and (2) the development of one-dimensional array antenna combined with mechanical motion. Since electronic switches have drawbacks of high loss and leakage, we optimized the switching circuit by using both of mechanical and electronic switches appropriately. Now the system is almost completed and being under calibration. We are going to evaluate the performance.
2 Millimeter wave and microwave imaging for antiterrorism screening
A.Hirose and Y.Arima
This year, we have been concentrating upon the construction of a Millimeter-wave (MMW) imaging system based on our complex-valued self-organizing map (CSOM) and envelope phase detection (EPD) method by employing one-dimensional EPD front-end at the receiving end as well as a frequency-stepped oscillator module at the transmitter. MMW active imaging has potentially a variety of applications. However, MMW circuits are often lossy and amplifiers are costly, which are serious problems in particular in arrays using many front-end circuits in parallel. To overcome these points, we have proposed the envelope phase detection (EPD) method where MMW is directly detected without amplification just after received at the antenna. This year, we evaluated the measurement time, performance dependence on window size as well as on the self-organization parameters in the complex-valued self-organizing map (CSOM) by conducting systematic experimental results. Experiments demonstrate that the CSOM visualizes successfully a liquid-filled small plastic bottle with a high tolerance on the self-organization coefficient for neighbors b, showing almost stable self-organization for changes over one order of magnitude.
3 Synthetic Aperture Radars
A.Hirose, R.Natsuaki, F.Shang, S.Fujinami and H.Nasu
Among synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques, interferometric SAR (InSAR) observes phase difference between phase measurements of slightly different paths for a target area, by which we can get the landscape (height and its changes) information., resulting in digital elevation map (DEM). It extends its applications to observations of earthquakes and volcanic activities. Theoretically, SAR interferogram should be a conservative field which mirrors the geologic distribution. However, actual interferograms contain a mass of rotational points named singular points (SPs). They prevent creating accurate digital elevation model (DEM). We think that many singular points indicate the local distortion in the interferogram. To solve this problem, we proposed local coregistration and phase correction by using amplitude information. The signal-to-noise ratio has increased by this method. We also investigate the origin of SPs experimentally. In parallel we are conducting theoretical and experimental research on coherence optimization for full-polarimetric interferometric observation data. In particular, instead of the conventional decomposition based on the scattering mechanisms, we proposed and investigated a new method of surface classification in the Poincare sphere (or Poincare space), which is more basic and more flexible in the adaptive polarization processing, to find that we can perform better classification than conventional C-matrix decomposition methods.
4 Channel Prediction Based on Complex-Valued Neural Networks
A.Hirose and T.Ding
Channel prediction is one of the most important issues for dealing with fading environment. If a future channel response is predicted, adaptive techniques such as pre-equalization and beam forming can be employed before transmission in order to avoid the degradation of communication quality. Previously we proposed a highly accurate method to predict time-varying channels by using a linear prediction of Fourier-domain channel parameters. The method combines frequency-domain and time-domain techniques. Simulation assuming a time division duplex (TDD) system demonstrates that the proposed method predicts varying channels very accurately. We also presented the dependence of the prediction error on the length of observation window and on the distance between scatterers. It is found that our method reduces the prediction error even when the scatterers are located very closely. This year, we developed a new method employing complex-valued neural networks so that we can deal a channel as an entity having complex amplitude. Experiments demonstrated that the prediction performance is much higher than previous systems. We also investigate adaptive arrays suitable for ultra wideband systems based on spatiotemporal neural processing. Now we evaluate the performance improvement quantitatively.
5 Highly functional antenna elements
A.Hirose, S.Kitazawa, K.Kikuta, H.Yoshida and N.Usami
Phased array, which is a typical method for variable directivity, cannot be applied to ultra wideband  (UWB) communications having widely distributed wavelength. Switching several antenna elements to various directions neither can work well since the direct coupling between the elements gets stronger when the entire antenna system needs to be miniaturized. Previously we realized a UWB adaptive antenna based on switching and stagger tuning. However it was not a planar antenna. Planar antennas also lead to wearable antenna systems in combination with flexible substrate. Then we proposed an antenna (radially arrayed gingko antenna, RAGA) in which four tapered slot antenna (TSA) elements are set radially to weaken the direct coupling. Diode switching enables variable directivity. However, reflection of the antenna is not small enough, and its side lobes are intricate and complicated. To solve these problems this year, we propose a novel antenna having slot fins with curved outline and wide roots. We realized better impedance matching and lower as well as smooth side lobes. We also proposed a new switchable circular-polarized waveguide-type antenna, and demonstrated a good generation of circular wave with a high fractional bandwidth. In addition, we investigated dispersion characteristics in ultra wideband antennas theoretically and experimentally. We also investigate learning array for ultra wideband systems. We proposed a new structure and an algorithm to realize a UWB adaptive array. Now we conduct a series of performance evaluation.

6 Imaging and direction-of-arrival estimation in ultra wideband systems

A.Hirose
In ultrasonic imaging, the direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation is one of the most important technologies. The so-called MUSIC and ESPRIT methods are widely used DoA estimation methods widely used in various fields. They are included in linear algebraic approaches and based on the directional dependence of the signal autocorrelation. The methods realizes high resolution with low calculation cost. In ultra wideband systems, however, they may show performance degradation because of the possible low autocorrelations and/or low signal-to-noise ratios, presenting larger estimation deviation and lower directional resolution. We proposed an idea to solve this problem this year. The system employs a spatiotemporal complex-valued neural network. In simulation and experiments, we found a lower direction deviation and higher spatial resolution than those in MUSIC systems.
7 Generation and application of fractional Brownian motion
A.Hirose and D.Danudirdjo
Fractional Brownian motion (fBm) is a useful model to represent various natural phenomena. It is highly useful in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) information processing. This year, we proposed a method for removing spikes in digital elevation models (DEMs) caused by residues in interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) phase image. We considered that the scattering mechanism is properly modeled by the small perturbation method for fractal surfaces and presented a model that relates the phase and magnitude in InSAR image. This data model provides the regularization term of the method, without directly enforcing smooth phase or magnitude. Noise models are given by additive Gaussian for the phase and multiplicative non-unit-mean gamma for the magnitude. Experiments with simulated and real L-band data show that the proposed method considerably improves DEM accuracy and simultaneously suppresses speckle and phase noise.
