Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP) talk on Advanced Neural Information Processing in Interferometric Synthtic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR)
IEEE GRSS Beijing Chapter

  • 11 December 2015 Beijing

    Date & Time: Dec. 11 (Fri), 2015, 10:00-11:00
    Place: Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (RADI), Beijing, China
    Host: Professor Jiancheng Shi (IEEE GRSS Beijing Chapter)
    Title: ”Advanced Neural Adaptive Processing in Interferometric and Polarimetric Radar Imaging”

    The lecture was held in Lecture Hall, Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (RADI), Beijing, China. About 50 audience gathered to discuss the adaptive processing merit and its origin of complex-valued and quaternion neural networks in Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and polarimetric SAR (PolSAR). The audience was mostly young students studying at RADI, which is assigned as a State Key Laboratory of Remote Sensing Science responsible for intensive research and education in the field. They are working both in hardware and software of remote sensing systems so that they seemed very much attracted by the complex-valued neural networks based on both physics and informatics. In the evening gathering with senior researchers, we discussed the further increasing importance of China with cooperation with Taiwan and Hong Kong. We also promised tight cooperation to hold successful IGARSS 2016 Beijing and IGARSS 2019 Yokohama.

Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP) in Local Language:
Advanced Neural Information Processing in Interferometric Synthtic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR)
IEEE GRSS All Japan Chapter

  • 26 November 2015 Sendai

    Date & Time: Nov 26 (Thu), 2015, 13:00-14:00
    Place: Sakura Hall, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan
    Host: Motoyuki Sato & Akira Hirose (IEEE GRSS All Japan Chapter)
    Title: ”Advanced Neural Adaptive Processing in Interferometric and Polarimetric Radar Imaging”

    The lecture was held in Sakura Hall, Tohoku University Katahira Campus, Sendai, Japan. More than 60 audience gathered to discuss the highly useful adaptive processing of complex-valued and quaternion neural networks in Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and polarimetric SAR (PolSAR). This was the first “local language” DLP talk held by All Japan Chapter. The audience was mostly Japanese but some were foreign residents familiar with Japanese language. It is noteworthy that many radar system company people attended at the talk so that a lot of practical questions were given to the speaker in the following reception in the evening. It has been found that a local language DLP widens the types of participants, which is favorable for the society membership promotion.

  • Tutorial "HD-3: Complex-Valued Neural Networks in Remote Sensing and Imaging"

    Sunday, July 24, 2011, 8:30AM-12:30AM

    Tutorial HD-3:
    Complex-Valued Neural Networks in Remote Sensing and Imaging

    Instructor: A. Hirose

    This tutorial presents and discusses the fundamentals of complex-valued neural networks (CVNNs) and their applications in the remote sensing and imaging field. The CVNN is a type of neural networks suitable for adaptive processing of complex-amplitude information. Since active remote sensing deals with coherent electromagnetic wave, we can expect the CVNN to work more appropriately than conventional neural networks or other adaptive methods in real-number space.

    The beginning half of the tutorial is devoted to presentation of the basic idea, framework, and treatment in the CVNNs. We discuss the processing dynamics of Hebbian rule, back-propagation learning, and self-organizing map in the complex domain. The latter half shows some examples of CVNN processing in the geoscience and remote sensing (GRSS) fields. Namely, we present distortion reduction in generation of digital elevation model (DEM) from the data obtained by interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). Another example is ground penetrating radar (GPR) to visualize underground objects to distinguish specific targets in high-clutter situation. Finally we discuss the prospect of the CVNNs in the GRSS fields.

    Scope and motivation:
    The complex-valued neural networks (CVNNs) have been widening the scope of applications not only in electronics and informatics, but also in social systems. The fields are, namely, optoelectronics, imaging, remote sensing, quantum neural devices and systems, intelligent transport systems, and so on. One of the most important characteristics of the CVNNs is the proper treatment of complex-amplitude information, e.g., the treatment of wave-related / rotation-related phenomena such as electromagnetism, lightwaves, quantum waves, oscillatory phenomena even including traffic signal control, and color image processing based on adaptive signal rotation in the RGB space.

    Recently there were several CVNN Special Sessions (SSs) in, for example, KES 2001-2003, ICONIP 2002 Singapore, and ICANN/ICONIP 2003 Istanbul, where we had large audience and enjoyed heated and encouraging discussions successfully. The series indicates the increasing importance of this new area.

    Now we hold a SS in the WCCI for a wider audience, including fuzzy and evolutionary researchers, to develop further investigations both in theoretical and application fields. We will present the latest results and considerations, and discuss prospective possibilities of the CVNNs. Papers that are, or might be, related to the CVNNs are widely solicited. Topics include, but are not limited to:

    * Complex-Valued Neuron Dynamics
    * Complex-Valued Associative Memories
    * Chaos in Complex Domain
    * Spatiotemporal CVNN Processing
